A  Christmas Carol :
Tony Behrman  with apologies to Dickens

‘Twas the night before Christmas, with peace in the house,
Nobody stirred , not even a mouse,
But next door the neighbours were having a ball,
The Doctors , the Gov’ment, the Funders and all,
Were partying nonstop , and spending the cash
The theme of the party : “The budgets to slash”.

Aaron and Anbin were stuck at the station,
Their baggage too heavy……. The health of the nation
Was simply too much to achieve overnight,
(Try 25 years , then you may get it right).
Fix primary health care , I hear you all say,
And to that I’ll just add:
“HIP HIP and Hooray!

Pravin sulked in the corner, all silent and ill,
The Rand had collapsed, the mines , they were still.
His problem? Find cash for the new NHI
Without that the health plan’s just Pie in Sky
And talking of  sky , did you hear SAA
Blew 15 Billion flying up ,up and away!
That’s a cool 15 less for the P Gordhan fund
Not to mention Nkandla, Pop Zuma’s rotund.
But cash , there’s a plenty in the Medical aid
Their reserve funds keep growing, ‘cos doctors aren’t paid!

Up and Up goes their stash, and their benefits less
Whilst Ganshot continues to cause us all stress.
Lets hope he protects those reserves from the Fiscus
Who covet them all for their NHI discus.

Private Hospitals  provide the glorious repast
Their profits have soared this Christmas , from last
Love them or hate them they’re all here to stay
The shares a resilient as their MRSA.

The Council was there, but their “reindeers” were sick
And to make matters worse for dear old Dr (St)  Nik
They’d found him guilty of “ conduct most foul ”
Ans “ Contempt of Council”, they announced with a scowl
He’d failed to pay for his re-registration
Out of HPC’s jumble of Administration.
IPAF had come and , and was now here to stay
With Bankmed it started, and now leads the way
For Medscheme , Discov’ry and Medihelp too
And Lib’ty and Bestmed, to name just a few,
Not forgetting the of old Blum’s MHG
They’re also with IPAF for us all to see.
There’s Morgan and Dennis and Lex at the Helm
With Tony and ‘Lijah to make sure they’re not “skelm”
Whilst Mukesh, with his wisdom and most careful eye
Ensures that the GPs get a nice slice of pie.

The party was waning,
The moon going down
There wasn’t a specialist left in the town
They’d all gone to Plett or even Sun City
Only GPs were left , now that’s not such a pity

‘Cos they can do medicine as good as the rest
They’re the Pillar of Healthcare, the Power and the Zest
To care for the folks of our      burgeoning nation
They really deserve a great standing ovation
So here’s to you all, a great 2013
We’re here for the GPs , we always have been

Have a good rest, and come back      serene
From  Tony , Sol and the Qualicare team
